Ask the Expert: Can Lice Survive Chlorine in Swimming Pools?
Yes. Head lice can survive in chlorinated swimming pool water for more than 24 hours. While chlorine kills bacteria, it does not kill lice or their eggs (nits). Lice simply “hold their breath” and cling tighter to the hair shaft when submerged, making a swimming pool a common place for transmission through shared towels or head-to-head contact.
